About Trinity College London

A music qualification recognised worldwide

Trinity College London is an international exam board based in London that has been assessing music since 1872. Hundreds of thousands of candidates take Trinity exams every year in more than 60 countries, and its music qualifications are regulated in the UK by Ofqual.

Its graded exams run from Initial to Grade 8. Each grade certifies a specific level of performance, technique and musicianship, and the candidate receives a detailed examiner's report and a certificate.

What it is for

  • A clear goal. Working towards a grade structures practice and makes progress visible, which helps students keep going.
  • Proof of level with an internationally recognised certificate, useful if the student studies or works abroad.
  • A plus on the CV and in admissions to schools and conservatoires abroad.
  • For any age. Children, teenagers and adults all take Trinity exams, entering at the grade that matches what they already play.

  • Digital exams, our usual route. The candidate records the exam on video at our school and we submit it to Trinity for assessment. You can re-record until you are happy, and the certificate is the same as for a face-to-face exam.
  • Face-to-face exams. A Trinity examiner comes to the school and the candidate performs live. Only organised when there are enough candidates for a session: ask us.
  • Theory of Music. Optional, and not required to pass the practical exam. If you are interested, ask us.
